Prairie Insects (Adult Program)

Discover the beauty and diversity of insects at the Marsh. This program will cover a variety of invertebrate species and the adaptations they use to survive.

The wetland preserve is home to hundreds of species of insects including a whole host of butterflies, dragonflies, damselflies, caterpillars, and more. Participants will use nets to capture insects and identify the species found.

This fun, educational activity is perfect for families looking to explore the outdoors.

Cost: Non-members, $7 for adults, $5 for children (under 12), Members, $5 for adults, and $3 for children (under 12).

Plein Air Drawing Workshop

In celebration of the special exhibition, Tall Grass Prairie: Picturing Biodiversity, the Figge is partnering with Nahant Marsh to offer a marsh trail walk/open air art making afternoon. Wear your walking shoes for the guided marsh trail walk followed by open air art making. Let the lush scenery and abundant wildlife inspire and inform your creative efforts.

Supplies: Students should bring their own art supplies for their personal medium preference: drawing, water color, collage, pastels, etc.
Portable stool (there are benches scattered throughout the area)
Water dishes (if needed for your medium of choice; water is available onsite)
Appropriate outdoor clothing, including a hat and sunscreen
(Art making will move inside to the Nahant education class rooms in inclement weather)

$30 member of Figge or Nahant Marsh; $40 non-member of Figge or Nahant Marsh

Edible and Medicinal Plants (Adult Program)

Explore the benefits of Iowa’s native plants and their edible and medicinal uses. Participants will learn about past uses of these plants and how they are still used today. The program will include a guided hike, wild edible lunch, and recipes.  Dress for the weather; rubber boots or sturdy shoes are recommended.

Cost: Member $12; Non-Member $15

Pollinator Conference

Nahant Marsh is excited to announce our Second Annual Quad Cities Pollinator Conference, to be held June 23 – 24, 2016. This conference is geared toward the agricultural community; municipal, state and federal government employees; landowners; homeowners and urban dwellers; beekeepers; students; and educators.

The first day will take place at the RiverCenter located in downtown Davenport, Iowa, and will consist of nearly 20 experts speaking on current pollinator issues, challenges, and opportunities. Morning tours to pollinator habitat sites will be given on the morning of the second day.

Early registration: $60
Registration after May 18: $75
Student registration is half price: $37.50

Picturing the Prairie Grand Opening

Wildflowers, grasses, birds and insects take over the fourth floor gallery at the Figge with the opening of Picturing the Prairie: Tallgrass QC. The exhibition features six regional artists working in a variety of mediums, and explores the biodiversity and unique beauty of the endangered tallgrass prairie.
